It's been a very interesting few years to say the least, both personally and in terms of the world. I always kept coming back to the concept of Tides, the cyclical nature of everything and the way sadness gives way to happiness… and vice versa. It all works out in the end though… and regardless of what's happening, the sea is still there, a constant in the madness.'
Working closely with string arranger Thomas Lea (Adele/Bonobo/Rhye), Catching Flies, real name George King, has created his most emotional and cohesive project yet. A beautiful, moving record, with sounds that unmistakably come straight from the heart, it's all held together by a singular sense of purpose and that trademark intricacy. 'I wanted it to feel as intricate and as layered as possible. I tried to really push myself musically. The challenge was – how do I make this sound much bigger than a guy sitting in a room with a laptop and a MIDI keyboard?'
Typically wide-ranging in genre, the album highlights his ability to effortlessly manoeuvre and experiment across the spectrum of electronic music, from hip-hop to house, from soul to neo-classical. The album is ledby new single 'Halo,' which sees him at his best - a melodic mesh of harp samples, vocal chops and a soaring string quartet finale. It's highly textured, deeply melodic and effortlessly marries live instrumentation with warm electronic beats. 'Spring' utilises a vocal sample he found whilst touring China, and 'The Last Phone Call' merges a spoken word voice-note from a friend with a vocal recorded on his iPhone on Hampstead Heath - 'I was pushing my bike and heard this guy singing in the distance, hidden in the trees… I had to EQ out the sound of my bike wheels turning to make it work.' 'Macerato' was made in lockdown with a couple of friends, whilst the album track 'Tides' caused the most headache - 'it went through about 20 different versions and ended up having 270 tracks of audio - there's so much in there that you don't necessarily hear on first listen.' The album also includes the 'absolutely brilliant' (Lauren Laverne, BBC6 Music) hit single 'GLY' which has received over 20 million streams to date and came with remixes by revered British dance/pop band Hot Chip, and Ninja Tune's DJ Boring. Also featured is piano piece 'Diamonds,' which has gathered artist support from the likes of Nils Frahm and Jungle. The album will be released in combination with a live video performance featuring a string quartet and a harpist.
Catching Flies has just hit 1.8 million monthly listeners on Spotify – no mean feat given he is a truly independent artist. It has been a busy couple of years. He was nominated for a BAFTA for his composition work on a video game, he played a headline show at the iconic Musee D'Orsay in Paris with a string quartet in collaboration with Cercle, and has toured North America, the UK, Europe, India, and China. He has also recently worked with Erick The Architect and Lord Apex.
Catching Flies released his debut album 'Silver Linings' in July 2019. Containing shades of everything from hip-hop to house, from soul to jazz, it was hailed as 'a soundtrack to Summertime' by the 405 - and was awarded album of the month by Future Music who described it as 'a brilliantly eclectic record… a moving journey that will last long in the memory.' Clash Magazine praised the LP's 'killer beats' and 'artfully orchestrated introspection,' whilst London In Stereo praised it's 'exceptional production.' Other press coverage for the album included The Guardian, Complex, Nowness, Mixmag, iD Magazine, Dazed & Confused, The Line of Best Fit and more. He has received radio support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Lauren Laverne, Mary Anne Hobbes & Huw Stephens. Artist support for 'Silver Linings' has come from the likes of Bonobo, Caribou, Loyle Carner, The Blessed Madonna, Keinemusik, Rufus Du Sol, George Fitzgerald and Lane 8. He toured the album performing headline Live shows throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and North America, as well as DJ shows at Bonobo's 'OUTLIER' event series in Europe and North America. Silver Linings was followed by 'Silver Linings Remixed,'a remix album featuring versions of tracks from his debut album reimagined by DJ Seinfeld, Andhim, Soundbwoy Killah, Laurence Guy, Ron Basejam, Grandbrothers, Trim and more.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0766/6964/9163/files/cover_302cc7f8-a87d-4919-a68c-d8b108880958.jpg?v=1730390954
is015-catching-flies-silver-linings
Silver Linings [Vinyl LP]

Catching Flies is set to release debut album 'Silver Linings' on 5th July 2019. Containing shades of house and jazz, to hip-hop and electronica, 'Silver Linings' is a melodic mesh of bright electronics and intricate rhythms. It's a beautiful, moving record, with sounds that unmistakably come straight from the heart.
Producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ George King began Catching Flies in late 2012, when he recorded and self released his first two EPs. With huge radio and press support around the world - including multiple #1's on Hype Machine, BBC Radio support from Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs, Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft, Nemone, Annie Mac, Huw Stephens; praise from i-D, Dazed, The Guardian, Complex, Notion, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash, Dummy and more - he's since attracted millions of listeners.
Against his instincts he signed with a big management agency and got talking to a label: it almost derailed his career. He explains "What I'd found so inspiring originally was the total freedom to make a tune on my own terms and just decide to put it out the next week. There was a hunger that came with that, and a sense of achievement from being the driving force, but as soon as I tampered with that ecosystem, it wasn't as exciting anymore".
Touring with electronic music giant Bonobo - who also included him on his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix - allowed him to watch up close someone who had taken a slow and steady path from tiny clubs in Brighton to arenas worldwide, and see it was possible to do without any compromise. After being teased through a succession of warmly received singles this past year, and seven years on from that first EP recorded and released from his bedroom, his debut album 'Silver Linings' is now ready to be revealed.
"It's taken me a while because I didn't want to speak until I had something to say. I wanted to make something positive, hopeful and colourful...The world isn't in the best place at the moment, and the last thing it needs is another dark and moody electronic record. I wanted 'Silver Linings' to be a scrapbook of the last three years. It's definitely eclectic, and it's supposed to be. Over three years a lot changes, your perspectives change, your tastes change; and I wanted to celebrate that by picking tracks that meant the most to me. One of my favourite things about making music is that it takes me right back to where I made it - the keyboard I used, the chair I was sitting on, the room I was in. It kind of teleports you back to a certain point in your life. A bit like a diary entry."
Recalling those moments brings back a range of memories: 'Satisfied' began by being tapped out on a £15 keyboard bought from Kentish Town Cash Converters, 'Yǔ' was made in the mountains of China during a few days off from touring, while an evening on Hampstead Heath inspired 'Kite Hill Theme'. Also featuring on the album is 'New Gods,' a collaboration with London's bright stars Jay Prince and Oscar Jerome and the beautiful and meditative 'Opals,' inspired by the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto.
Catching Flies is already looking to the future, closing the first chapter in an exciting and inspiring story, 'Silver Linings' is only the beginning.
"A few weeks after I finished the album, I moved out of my house I made all the music in, so it feels like the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another. I can't wait to make the next one now."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0766/6964/9163/files/cover_fcb043b1-13b6-4990-9868-9d7c5e9cc06c.jpg?v=1730391033
is025-catching-flies-silver-linings-remixed
Silver Linings Remixed [Vinyl LP]

Set for release on 17th April, Catching Flies presents 'Silver Linings Remixed', a remix album featuring versions of tracks from his debut album reimagined by DJ Seinfeld, Andhim, Soundbwoy Killah, Laurence Guy, Ron Basejam, Grandbrothers and more.
Sequenced by Catching Flies into a flowing narrative arc, the remixes come from some of the producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ's favorite artists, hand picked by him to transform 'Silver Linings' into an alternate version.
"I sat down and wrote a list of everyone I'd been listening to over the last few years but then everything had to fit together and develop in a way that felt like a journey rather than a bunch of remixes chucked together.
